Durham University has achieved 74th place in the latest QS World University Rankings, demonstrating excellence in teaching, facilities and student outcomes.

Top 8% of universities globally

The University has climbed four places in the rankings since last year. This increase puts Durham in the top eight per cent of the 1,011 higher education institutions ranked, according to QS.

Durham University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart Corbridge, said: “Durham is a world leading university with significant strengths in research, teaching and the student experience across all academic subjects and associated activities.”

The rankings are based on performance in five categories: academic reputation; employer reputation; research citations per faculty; the ratio of academic staff to students; and the ratios of international staff to students.

Gold award for teaching excellence

Durham has also received the highest accolade – Gold Award – in the national Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF). The awards assess excellence at universities in terms of teaching, employer reputation and student outcomes.

Professor Alan Houston, Durham University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), commented: “To be awarded Gold is a wonderful recognition of the talent and dedication of our staff. We strive to empower students through enquiry-based learning, and the impact of this can be seen through the remarkable achievements of our students.”

Investing in facilities and technology

The University is focused on investing in new facilities and innovative learning environments. The Teaching and Learning Centre, due to open in September 2019, will provide support, facilities and new technologies for students and staff. There will also be an Education Laboratory for the development of new teaching methods.
