Music student writes song features in news

Studying abroad is a big change for everyone – especially during a global pandemic – but a student at the International Study Centre has found a creative way to address her feelings. Dani from Hong Kong, who studies the International Foundation Year in Humanities, Law and Social Science, has written a song all about how she has dealt with homesickness.

Initially, Dani didn’t know if she’d made the right decision to study abroad and travel during the pandemic. However, Dani’s beautiful lyrics and music show that she knows she made the right decision – both for herself and for her music career. The song is titled ‘Where I Belong’, showing Dani knows that arriving in Durham was the right choice. In fact, Dani’s song has proven so popular that it has been written about in the media, helping to inspire even more students to follow their dreams.

Dani was inspired to share her song after speaking with the International Study Centre’s Student Support Officer, Sophie Holland-Francis. The two now plan to work together to help other students at the International Study Centre explore their creativity and develop the student community.

Durham University is world-renowned for its music degrees. Its music department has been ranked the top UK music department for four years running in The Complete University Guide (2018-2021). Dani aims to progress to study BA (Hons) Music at the University in September, and hopes to develop her music skills even more.
